Glendale man charged with first-degree intentional homicide in fatal Milwaukee Deer District shooting case
A homicide charge follows late-night shooting near Vel R. Phillips Avenue and State Street
A 26-year-old man from Glendale has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the Feb. 28, 2026, fatal shooting of 47-year-old Sharita Barber in Milwaukee’s Deer District, a busy entertainment corridor west of the Milwaukee River and adjacent to Fiserv Forum.
The shooting was reported shortly after 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Vel R. Phillips Avenue and State Street. Barber was found in the street with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two bystanders began life-saving aid before police and Milwaukee Fire Department personnel took over.
What investigators say happened: a traffic collision, confrontation, and gunfire
The criminal complaint outlines an incident that began with a minor traffic crash. Court records describe Barber as having backed into a vehicle connected to the defendant, Demetris Riley. The complaint alleges the encounter escalated into a confrontation, during which Barber retrieved a firearm from her vehicle.
Investigators documented multiple sources of video evidence reviewed during the inquiry, including a city pole camera and footage from a ride-share driver’s dash camera, as well as a recording captured by a witness that shows portions of the initial confrontation but not the shooting itself.
As in all criminal cases, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Evidence described in court filings: recovered firearm, casings, and video review
Detectives reported recovering a .22-caliber handgun with an extended magazine at the scene. Six spent .22-caliber cartridge casings were also documented. Forensic analysis described in the complaint indicates the recovered handgun was not the firearm that fired the casings located at the scene, pointing investigators to at least one other weapon involved.
Court filings also reference statements attributed to the defendant about the sequence of events after the initial shots were fired. The complaint describes allegations that an additional person who was with Riley fired at Barber first, after which Riley is accused of firing additional shots. The complaint further alleges Riley drove over Barber while leaving the scene.
Additional detention and initial court proceedings
Authorities also took a 24-year-old woman into custody in connection with the case, according to court records referenced in local reporting. The scope of potential charges involving other individuals was not fully detailed in the publicly available court summary at the time of charging.
Riley was scheduled to make an initial appearance in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Friday, March 6, 2026. If convicted of first-degree intentional homicide in Wisconsin, the charge carries a potential life sentence, with release eligibility determined by the court under state law.
Location and context: Deer District crowds and a new nearby venue
The shooting occurred near Landmark Credit Union Live, a new indoor concert venue in the Deer District entertainment area. The venue’s first scheduled weeks included concerts on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28, dates that drew large crowds downtown. Investigators have not publicly alleged that the event inside the venue caused the confrontation; the complaint focuses on the crash and the dispute that followed outside.
