Milwaukee Public Museum nears fundraising target as higher construction costs add pressure to 2027 timeline

Fundraising advances while project budget faces cost escalation
The Milwaukee Public Museum’s campaign to finance its new facility has moved close to completion, with museum leaders reporting that the effort is nearing its overall target even as construction costs across the region continue to rise.
The project centers on a new museum building under construction near North Sixth Street and West McKinley Avenue. The facility is planned as a roughly 200,000-square-foot museum that is scheduled to open in early 2027, following a construction period that began in summer 2024 and is expected to wrap up in late 2026.
How the project is financed
The overall project budget is $240 million and combines public funding and private philanthropy. The financing plan includes $90 million in public dollars and $150 million in private donations. The budget covers building and exhibit design and construction, costs associated with packaging and moving the museum’s collections, and funds for future operations through an endowment.
As of January 2025, museum officials reported $191 million secured when combining public and private sources, including $105 million in private donations and $86 million in public funding. Public commitments have included $45 million from Milwaukee County and $40 million from the State of Wisconsin, along with additional public sources. Museum leadership has also pursued federal grant funding.
Construction-cost increases complicate planning
The museum’s fundraising progress is unfolding against a broader backdrop of rising nonresidential construction costs in Milwaukee. A regional construction-cost index showed costs in Milwaukee increased more than the national average in early 2025, reflecting ongoing price pressures in materials and supply chains that can influence large civic projects.
For the museum project, cost management has been a recurring topic in public committee briefings as construction proceeds. Construction is underway, with exterior work expected to be completed on the current schedule before interior work continues through 2026.

Transition from the current museum building
Operations at the existing museum at 800 W. Wells St. are expected to continue through 2026, ahead of the transition to the new facility. The move is part of a broader shift away from the decades-old building, which has faced ongoing maintenance challenges.
The museum’s move will require coordinated planning for construction completion, exhibit installation, and the transfer of collections before the new building opens.
Separately, Milwaukee County has been evaluating redevelopment paths for the current museum site after the institution relocates, including demolition and mixed-use redevelopment concepts that could be marketed to developers in mid-2026.
