Milwaukee Common Council to Address Food Waste and Public Safety Agreements Today

Common Council Convenes for March Session
The Milwaukee Common Council is scheduled to meet today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in the Common Council Chambers at City Hall. This session marks a significant legislative day as the Council takes up several high-profile resolutions and appointments that impact the city’s environmental footprint and public safety infrastructure.
Among the primary items on the agenda is Resolution 251596, which would authorize a $75,000 service contract between the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the City’s Environmental Collaboration Office. The funding is directed toward the FEED MKE program, which provides technical assistance to food waste generators to prevent and divert food waste from landfills. This initiative aligns with Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s broader environmental and sustainability goals for 2026.
Public Safety and Mayoral Appointments
The Council is also expected to vote on a formal agreement between the Milwaukee Police Department and Milwaukee World Festival, Inc. This resolution would solidify the terms for extra-duty police services during major events at the Henry Maier Festival Park, including Summerfest. Additionally, the Council will consider the mayoral appointments of Matthew Torbenson and Elisabeth Mueller to the Milwaukee Commission on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, filling critical roles in the city's advocacy and prevention network.
Education and Neighborhood Infrastructure Meetings
Beyond City Hall, education and infrastructure are at the forefront of today’s civic schedule:
- MPS Budget Community Meeting: Milwaukee Public Schools will host a community meeting at Riverside University High School from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to discuss budget priorities for the 2026-2027 school year.
- N. 76th Street Improvements: A public meeting regarding proposed safety and pavement improvements for WIS 181 (N. 76th Street) is scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Laborers Union AFL-CIO Building on W. Appleton Avenue.
- Public Debt Commission: The commission is slated to meet at 3:00 p.m. in Room 405 of City Hall to discuss municipal financial obligations.
- Future State Project: At the county level, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley’s office is hosting a listening session at the Franklin Public Library starting at 6:00 p.m. to gather feedback on draft recommendations for future county services.
Mayor Cavalier Johnson continues to emphasize 2026 as the "Year of Housing," a theme expected to influence many of today's deliberations. In a separate development, the Mayor’s office also recently made headlines by pitching Milwaukee as a future site for major WWE events, a move intended to bolster the city's entertainment profile and retain local sports talent.
