Significant Construction Launches on N. 76th Street

Commuters in Milwaukee County should prepare for significant travel changes starting today, Monday, March 2, 2026. A major $13.4 million resurfacing project is officially underway on a 4.5-mile stretch of N. 76th Street (WIS 181), extending from Florist Avenue north to County Line Road. This project involves comprehensive roadway improvements, including the upgrading of 12 signalized intersections and the installation of new ADA-compliant sidewalks.

Drivers should expect a reduction in travel lanes throughout the corridor. While access to local businesses and residences will remain open, motorists are likely to encounter single and double lane closures in both directions. These restrictions are expected to cause delays during peak morning and afternoon drive times. WisDOT recommends utilizing alternate routes such as N. 91st Street or N. 60th Street to avoid the most congested areas of the 76th Street corridor.

I-94 East-West Corridor and Ramp Updates

The I-94 East-West Freeway project continues to impact traffic patterns across the city. Starting tonight, full overnight freeway closures are scheduled between the Stadium Interchange and the Marquette Interchange. These closures, intended for girder removal at the 27th Street bridge, will take place Monday through Wednesday nights. While the freeway is slated to reopen before the morning rush, early-shift workers and late-night travelers should plan for detours via local streets.

Additionally, several long-term ramp closures remain in effect. The I-94 eastbound exit ramp to General Mitchell Boulevard and the entrance ramp from General Mitchell Boulevard to I-94 westbound are currently closed. Travelers heading toward the Miller Park area or West Allis should continue to follow posted detours using WIS 175 or Blue Mound Road.

Public Transit Detours and Service Alerts

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) reports that several routes are operating under construction-related detours today. Commuters should be aware of the following impacts:

  • Route 24: Continues to detour off the 16th Street Bridge over the Menomonee River Valley. All trip times have been adjusted to account for the detour.
  • Route 44U: Remains on detour due to the ongoing closure of the eastbound 68th Street on-ramp to I-94.
  • Route 60: Continues to detour off 60th Street between Main Street and Bluemound Road as part of the interstate reconstruction.
  • PurpleLine: Detours remain in place on 27th Street between Clybourn and National Avenue.

Transit riders are encouraged to use real-time tracking apps to monitor bus arrivals, as heavy traffic near construction zones may lead to intermittent delays. While spring service changes are scheduled for later this month, current schedules remain in place for today’s commute.
