I-94 Reconstruction and N. 76th Street Resurfacing Cause Tuesday Morning Delays

Morning Commute Overview
Commuters in Milwaukee should prepare for a challenging drive this Tuesday morning, March 3, 2026. Major infrastructure projects on both the interstate system and local arterials are causing significant shifts in traffic patterns. While weather conditions remain clear with temperatures in the mid-30s, the high volume of construction zones requires extra travel time, particularly on the city’s west side and near the Marquette Interchange.
Major Arteries: I-94 East-West Project
The I-94 East-West Freeway Project continues to be the primary source of disruption for regional travel. Drivers are reminded that the 27th Street bridge reconstruction remains in an active phase, which has significantly restricted access in the immediate area. Key closures to navigate include:
- Hawley Road Interchange: Long-term closures remain in effect as crews modernize the interchange.
- 68th Street On-Ramp: The eastbound on-ramp to I-94 is closed for ongoing widening work; motorists are advised to use the 70th Street or 84th Street entrances as alternatives.
- Lane Shifts: Expect narrowed lanes and reduced speed limits between 70th Street and 16th Street as the corridor expands from six to eight lanes.
Local Roadworks and Resurfacing
Surface street travel is also impacted by recent project start dates. The N. 76th Street resurfacing project, which began yesterday, is now in full swing. This project covers a 4.5-mile stretch, resulting in intermittent lane closures and slower moving traffic through this busy North Side corridor.
Additionally, utility work by We Energies has closed N. 51st Street (between Clarke and Hadley) and W. Center Street (between 50th and 52nd). These blocks will remain closed to through traffic until March 9. Signed detours are currently in place to guide drivers around the utility infrastructure zones.
MCTS Transit and Evening Alerts
The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) reports several detours affecting morning routes. The GreenLine is currently detouring off Oakland Avenue from Capitol to Hampton, and Route 60 continues to detour off Hawley Road due to the I-94 construction. Riders should note that while spring service modifications are set to begin on March 8, current detours for Routes 44U and 18 remain active today.
For those planning their evening return, be advised that the NB WIS 441 ramp to NB I-41 is scheduled for a full nightly closure starting at 8:00 p.m. tonight. The ramp will remain closed until 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning for bridge work.
