A neighborhood-run food access effort expands to five sites

Milwaukee’s Community Powered Fridge Network has expanded on the city’s North and Northwest sides with four additional public refrigerators placed at community organizations, bringing the network to five locations. The sites are intended to provide free, walk-up access to fresh food and pantry items through a donation-based system commonly described as “take what you need, leave what you can.”

The new refrigerators are located at Rooted & Rising (3940 W. Lisbon Ave.), Sherman Park Community Center (3526 W. Fond du Lac Ave.), the Dominican Center (2470 W. Locust St.), and Metcalfe Park Community Bridges (3624 W. North Ave.). The original refrigerator opened in September 2025 at Tricklebee Cafe (4424 W. North Ave.).

How the fridges operate

Each location relies on a mix of neighborhood donations and partner support to keep food available. Items typically include produce and other basic groceries intended to be taken at no cost, without formal enrollment. Access varies by host site, with some locations aligning availability to building hours and staffing.

Organizers have described the model as both immediate relief and a way to build local coordination around food distribution. The approach also seeks to reduce edible food waste by redirecting usable items to community members.

Why this expansion is happening now

The network’s growth follows heightened concern about grocery access on Milwaukee’s North and Northwest sides after multiple store closures. One catalyst repeatedly cited by local groups has been the closing of a Pick ’n Save near the Metcalfe Park area in mid-2025, which left residents with fewer nearby options for fresh food.

The first community-powered fridge effort was developed in response to that closure, with neighborhood groups and community partners using a public-facing refrigerator to create a consistent, low-barrier place to pick up food while longer-term solutions are pursued.

Partners and public initiatives involved

The expansion has included support tied to FEED MKE, a City of Milwaukee Environmental Collaboration Office pilot project that connects partners to address food insecurity while also reducing food waste. The city initiative is linked to broader goals related to redistribution of surplus food, landfill diversion, and measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions associated with wasted food.

Community groups involved in the fridge network have emphasized collaboration across host sites and neighborhood leaders, with the refrigerator placements designed to create multiple access points across nearby neighborhoods rather than relying on a single distribution hub.

Where the Community Powered Fridge Network is now located

  • Tricklebee Cafe — 4424 W. North Ave.
  • Metcalfe Park Community Bridges — 3624 W. North Ave.
  • Rooted & Rising — 3940 W. Lisbon Ave.
  • Sherman Park Community Center — 3526 W. Fond du Lac Ave.
  • The Dominican Center — 2470 W. Locust St.

The network is built around shared responsibility: community members both donate and pick up food as needed, with host sites providing space and day-to-day oversight.
