Celebrating Women in Art at the Milwaukee Public Library

Welcome to Monday, March 2, 2026. As we step into the first week of March, Milwaukee is buzzing with creative energy and community spirit. Today marks a significant beginning as the city celebrates the start of Women’s History Month with a series of interactive workshops and historical exhibitions. Whether you are looking to tap into your inner artist or enjoy an evening of world-class music, there is plenty to explore across our local neighborhoods.

The Milwaukee Public Library is hosting several "Artsy Inspirations" sessions today to celebrate the contributions of women to the arts. These events provide a fantastic opportunity for residents of all ages to learn about influential female artists and create their own masterpieces under the guidance of local library staff.

  • Crafting Connections (Georgia O’Keeffe): Head over to the Bay View Branch from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Participants will explore the contributions of Wisconsin-born artist Georgia O’Keeffe and use oil pastels on canvas board to create original works inspired by her iconic floral and desert styles.
  • Painting a Symphony (Joan Mitchell): At the Central Library, children and teens can join a specialized session from 4:00 PM to 4:45 PM. This workshop focuses on the abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell, encouraging young attendees to translate their emotions into vibrant, large-scale paintings.
  • Artsy Inspirations (Yayoi Kusama): The Center Street Branch will host a session from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM centered on the legendary Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama. Known for her signature polka dots and repetitive patterns, Kusama’s life and art will serve as the foundation for a hands-on project where visitors can create their own dot-inspired works.

Local Exhibitions and Public Displays

For those who prefer a self-guided experience, the Central Library is debuting its featured March exhibit: "We Stand on Their Shoulders: A History of Wisconsin Women and Voting." Located on the first floor on Main Street, this traveling display highlights the pivotal moments and key leaders who fought for political rights in our state. It is an essential stop for anyone interested in local history and the enduring legacy of Wisconsin’s suffragettes.

Evening Live Music and Community

As the sun sets, the local music scene takes center stage. The Cactus Club in Bay View is the place to be at 7:00 PM for a performance by the acclaimed Victor Jones. Known for his versatility and soulful approach to jazz and percussion, Jones brings a unique sound to the venue that is perfect for a sophisticated Monday night out. It is a great chance to support one of the city’s most intimate and legendary live music spaces while enjoying high-caliber musicianship. From the South Side to Downtown, Milwaukee offers a diverse array of cultural experiences today to help you kick off your week right.
