Midweek Commute Update: Significant Delays on I-94 and I-43

Commuters in Milwaukee should prepare for a challenging drive this Wednesday, March 4, 2026. Several major construction projects and maintenance operations are converging today, impacting both freeway travel and local surface streets. If you are heading into the city or navigating the suburbs, plan for extra travel time and consider alternative routes where possible.

Freeway Alerts: I-43 and I-94

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has scheduled critical maintenance on I-43 Northbound today. Work is expected to take place between 7:30 AM and 2:00 PM in the Ozaukee and Northern Milwaukee County area. Drivers should expect lane closures and slower speeds throughout the morning and early afternoon.

Ongoing construction on I-43 Southbound continues to cause congestion between Glendale and Grafton. This project is not expected to wrap up until early April, so the daily bottleneck remains a factor for south-bound travelers. Additionally, the massive I-94 East-West expansion is in full swing. Notable long-term impacts today include the continued closure of the Hawley Road Interchange and the 68th Street ramp to eastbound I-94. Lane reductions are in place along this 3.5-mile stretch, consistently adding 10 to 15 minutes to peak-hour commutes.

Surface Street Closures and Bridge Work

Significant disruptions are also present on local roads today. Residents and commuters on the city’s North Side should note that North 51st Street (from West Clarke Street to West Hadley Street) and West Center Street (from North 50th Street to North 52nd Street) are currently closed to vehicular traffic. These closures are necessary for underground electrical infrastructure work and are expected to last through March 9. Signed detours are in place, but local congestion is expected during school drop-off and pick-up hours.

Furthermore, the 27th Street Bridge over the Menomonee River remains completely closed for reconstruction. This year-long closure continues to divert a heavy volume of traffic to the 16th Street and 35th Street viaducts. Motorists should anticipate heavier-than-usual traffic on these alternative crossings during the morning and evening rushes.

Public Transit and Community Notices

  • MCTS Detours: Route 24 is currently operating on a long-term detour, avoiding the 16th Street Bridge. This detour is expected to remain in place until the fall.
  • Spring Service Changes: While not effective until this Sunday, March 8, riders should prepare for the second phase of the 2026 Service Plan. This will involve segment shortening for several routes, including the 11, 22, 24, 80, and 88.
  • Community Event: Milwaukee County is hosting a "Future State Project" community listening session tonight at the Kosciuszko Community Center (2201 S. 7th St) from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Expect increased pedestrian activity and localized parking congestion in the surrounding neighborhood.
