Construction season meets baseball season near American Family Field

Drivers heading to Milwaukee Brewers games are entering a new phase of construction season as long-term work on the I-94 East-West corridor advances through key stretches near the Stadium Interchange. Transportation officials and the team are emphasizing trip planning, adjusted routes and close attention to ramp and lane changes that can shift week to week.

The I-94 East-West Freeway Project has been under construction since early November 2025, with major work continuing through 2026 and beyond in multiple segments between roughly 70th Street and the Marquette Interchange area. In 2026, the project’s “Early East Leg” work includes reconstruction of the 27th Street bridge and nearby local streets, along with eastbound I-94 work expected to bring long-term closures and traffic impacts.

Lane and ramp changes expected around early-season games

One of the most significant near-term impacts is a long-term eastbound I-94 lane reduction scheduled to begin the evening of March 9, 2026, closing one lane from 35th Street to 25th Street through late 2026. The 35th Street on-ramp to eastbound I-94 is also set to close during that period.

At the same time, construction scheduling has been designed to reduce peak disruption during the start of the baseball season. Plans call for eastbound I-94 to return to three lanes west of the stadium area by late March, and for the General Mitchell Boulevard ramps to reopen by that time. Later in the year, the long-term eastbound lane closure is expected to return in late summer, while the Mitchell Boulevard ramps are expected to remain open until fall.

Work zones extend beyond the freeway

Traffic impacts are not limited to the interstate. Local street and intersection projects have also been timed to improve circulation near primary stadium approaches. Separately approved improvements along National Avenue (WIS 59) and Brewers Boulevard/Miller Park Way were designed to strengthen traffic flow ahead of longer-term ramp changes tied to the broader corridor work. That project includes lane additions, signal changes, and intersection updates while keeping roads open with reduced lanes during construction phases.

What motorists should do before heading to the ballpark

  • Check the planned route before leaving and allow additional travel time, especially for weekday games and peak arrival windows.

  • Expect shifts between freeway and local-street options depending on which ramps and lanes are open on a given date.

  • Watch for overnight closures tied to bridge work and demolition activity that can alter morning and evening travel patterns.

  • Follow work-zone speeds and merging instructions, as congestion can build quickly when lanes drop near the stadium area.

With multiple segments under construction at once, the most reliable way to avoid last-minute delays is to confirm current ramp and lane availability the day of travel.

Construction activity is expected to remain dynamic throughout 2026 as crews shift traffic, rebuild structures and advance staged work, making real-time awareness central to smoother game-day travel.
