Morning Commute Alert: Slippery Conditions and Major Freeway Closures

Milwaukee commuters should brace for a challenging morning on Friday, February 20, 2026, as a combination of lingering winter weather and extensive long-term construction projects on major arteries threatens to slow travel across the metro area. With temperatures dropping overnight and light snow showers and mist persisting into the morning, road surfaces are expected to be slick, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Local authorities are advising drivers to reduce speeds on the freeway system as visibility may be intermittently reduced during the early rush hour.

Major Highway Impacts and Detours

The most significant impacts continue to stem from the ongoing I-94 East-West Freeway Project. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has confirmed several major closures that will affect thousands of daily travelers today. The 27th Street bridge over I-94 remains closed for reconstruction, along with the I-94 eastbound exit to 26th Street and St. Paul Avenue. Commuters who typically use these routes are advised to utilize Wisconsin Avenue, 35th Street, or Greenfield Avenue as primary detours.

Furthermore, several key ramps near the Stadium Interchange remain inaccessible:

  • The I-94 eastbound exit ramp to General Mitchell Boulevard is closed. Travelers should use WIS 175 southbound to Frederick Miller Way as an alternate.
  • The General Mitchell Boulevard entrance ramp to I-94 westbound is closed; traffic is being diverted to Blue Mound Road and 84th Street.
  • Lane and ramp closures remain in effect on I-94 between 70th Street and Zablocki Drive, causing significant bottlenecks during peak hours.

Local Road Conditions and Weight Restrictions

As of 12:01 a.m. this morning, WisDOT has officially ended the "Frozen Road" declaration statewide. For local haulers and commercial drivers, this means Class II roadway weight restrictions are now in effect for much of the region. While this primarily affects heavy vehicles, the transition into the spring thaw period can lead to rapid pavement deterioration. Commuters on local city streets should stay alert for the emergence of new potholes and uneven surfaces as the ground begins to thaw.

Public Transit and Streetcar Alerts

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) reports several active detours due to ongoing infrastructure work. Commuters using the following routes should check for updated real-time arrivals:

  • Route 60 is currently detoured off 60th Street/Hawley Road between Main Street and Bluemound Road.
  • Route 24 continues its detour off the 16th Street Bridge over the Menomonee River Valley.
  • Route 44U is experiencing delays and rerouting near the 68th Street on-ramp to I-94.
  • The Hop streetcar system is noting that L-Line trips may take longer than usual today as vehicles complete full downtown loops to accommodate track adjustments.

Given the mix of freezing mist and construction-related bottlenecks, commuters are urged to plan for at least 20 minutes of extra travel time this morning to ensure a safe arrival at their destinations.
