Milwaukee jazz-and-coffee venue sets final week of service on King Drive

Sam’s Place Jazz Café, a coffeehouse and live-jazz venue at 3338 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood, is scheduled to close on Friday, Feb. 20, 2026. The business said it is ending operations after nearly five years.

The café identified ongoing economic challenges and shifts in the local business landscape as factors behind the decision. It also described rising costs, changes in consumer patterns, and longer-term economic impacts as pressures faced during recent years.

A venue built around coffee, food, and Milwaukee jazz history

Opened in 2021, Sam’s Place positioned itself as a neighborhood gathering space that paired a full menu with a jazz-focused identity, including both recorded and live music. The café’s concept emphasized community connection, with programming and décor tied to Milwaukee’s jazz legacy.

Founder and owner Sam Belton, a Milwaukee jazz drummer and entrepreneur, has been associated with jazz-themed hospitality concepts in the city and has been recognized for decades of involvement in music and community life.

Final-week schedule and a community sendoff

For its final week, the café announced service from Wednesday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It also planned a Black History Soul Food lunch on Thursday, Feb. 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., framed as an opportunity for customers and community members to gather and mark the closing.

  • Final day of operations: Friday, Feb. 20, 2026

  • Final-week café hours: Wednesday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

  • Black History Soul Food lunch: Thursday, Feb. 19, 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Role of the King Drive redevelopment and institutional investment

Sam’s Place operated out of a renovated former bank building that was part of a broader set of reinvestment efforts along King Drive. The project included renovation work and an addition, with Sam’s Place planned as a first-floor tenant. The building’s redevelopment also included space for a wellness provider on an upper floor.

The café said it benefited from investment intended to expand facilities and support a community gathering space for Harambee residents and visitors. The closing statement emphasized that, despite ongoing operational pressures, the café’s mission remained centered on community, local coffee, and cultural programming through jazz.

“While this chapter is coming to a close, what we built together will always live on, in the relationships formed with neighbors, the memories shared with patrons, and the community we were honored to serve.”

What the closure means for Harambee’s small-business landscape

The announced closure adds to the continuing churn facing independent restaurants and cafés, particularly those operating with live programming and higher fixed costs. Sam’s Place described its final days as a period to recognize employees, patrons, and partners who supported the venue’s operations and its cultural role on Milwaukee’s North Side.

No reopening plan or successor tenant was announced with the closure notice.
