Public Notice: Extreme Cold Advisory and Winter Service Updates for January 24

Extreme Cold Advisory and Emergency Warming Shelter
The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has issued an extreme cold advisory effective through Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 12:00 PM. Dangerous wind chills and subzero temperatures have prompted the opening of an emergency warming shelter at the Washington Park Senior Center, located at 4420 W. Vliet St. This facility will remain operational until noon today to assist individuals seeking refuge from the life-threatening conditions. Residents requiring additional warming locations, transportation, or cold-weather assistance are encouraged to call 211 or text "TXT-211" for immediate support and connection to available community services. Health officials urge everyone to limit time outdoors and monitor for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
Department of Public Works: Service Suspensions
Due to the continued extreme weather conditions, the Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced several changes to municipal operations for Saturday, January 24. Please take note of the following service alerts:
- Drop-Off Centers: All City of Milwaukee Drop-Off Centers are closed on Saturday, January 24. Operations are expected to resume on their next regularly scheduled business day, weather permitting.
- Sanitation Services: Non-emergency field operations, including garbage and recycling collections, remain limited. Residents whose collection was missed earlier this week should keep their carts at the normal collection point and ensure snow and ice are cleared around the containers for when crews are able to safely resume routes.
- City Tow Lot: The Tow Lot at 3811 W. Lincoln Ave. will be open for limited hours on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Residents are advised to call the lot in advance to confirm the status of their vehicles.
Winter Parking Regulations and Enforcement
Winter parking regulations remain in full effect citywide through March 1. Additionally, the City of Milwaukee reminds residents of the new habitual parking violator ordinance that went into effect on January 1, 2026. Under this updated policy, vehicles with five or more unpaid parking citations that are over 60 days old are subject to towing. This applies to vehicles parked both legally and illegally on any street, highway, or publicly owned parking facility. Motorists are encouraged to resolve any outstanding citations through the Violations Bureau to avoid impoundment.
Public Announcements and Training
The Department of Neighborhood Services is proceeding with the scheduled Live Landlord Training on Saturday, January 24, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Washington Park Library. This five-hour session provides property managers with comprehensive materials on legal and business management. Separately, the Health Department notes that the Keenan STI Clinic remains temporarily closed and is slated to reopen in February 2026. Residents seeking sexual health services in the interim should contact other local MHD clinics for availability.
