Public Notice: Extreme Cold Advisories and City Council Committee Updates

Extreme Cold Advisory and Health Safety Precautions
The Milwaukee Health Department and the National Weather Service have issued a critical weather advisory for Thursday, January 22, 2026. Extreme cold temperatures are expected to persist through the weekend, with wind chills projected to reach as low as -40 degrees. Under these conditions, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors and dress in multiple layers, ensuring that all extremities—including ears, hands, and feet—are fully covered.
The City reminds those in need of heat or shelter that emergency warming centers are open throughout Milwaukee. Facilities like Repairers of the Breach are operating 24/7 during this period of sub-zero temperatures. Residents can dial 2-1-1 or call (414) 773-0211 for real-time information on the nearest available shelter and energy assistance. Additionally, the Health Department recommends maintaining a cold-weather preparedness kit that includes blankets, extra batteries, a battery-operated radio, and high-calorie non-perishable food.

Property Tax and Municipal Reminders
The City Treasurer’s Office reminds all property owners that the deadline for 2025 property tax payments is fast approaching. The full payment or the initial installment payment must be received on or before January 31, 2026, to avoid delinquency. Residents are encouraged to pay by mail or use the online payment portal at the City Treasurer’s website to avoid traveling in the current weather conditions. Please note that City Hall will be open to the public starting at 7:30 AM during this tax collection period.
Furthermore, the Department of Public Works (DPW) advises that winter parking regulations remain in full effect. Alternate side parking is required on most residential streets between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM. In the event of a declared snow emergency, these hours may be extended. Finally, today is the final week for residents to request Christmas tree collection. Requests must be submitted via the MKE Mobile Action app or by calling (414) 286-CITY by January 31.
Winterization of Home Infrastructure
Milwaukee Water Works has released a service announcement regarding the prevention of frozen water pipes and meters. Due to the extreme frost depth, residents are advised to ensure that indoor pipes in unheated areas, such as basements or crawlspaces, are properly insulated. If you suspect a service pipe leak or observe significant icing on public roads, please contact the 24-hour water control center immediately.
