Milwaukee charter school outlines grade expansion and network membership

Pathways High, a Milwaukee independent public charter school currently serving grades 9–12, has announced plans to expand into the middle grades beginning in fall 2026. The school said it intends to add grades 6–8, extending its project-based learning model to students before they reach high school.

The school operates at 3022 W. Wisconsin Ave. on Milwaukee’s west side and enrolls students from across Milwaukee and surrounding suburbs. Federal education data for the most recent available school-year profile lists the district as an independent charter with one school, serving grades 9–12, with 171 students and 11 full-time-equivalent classroom teachers.

What the expansion would change

The planned move into grades 6–8 would shift Pathways High from a high-school-only program to a combined middle and high school model. The school describes its instructional approach as personalized, project-based learning built around interdisciplinary projects and authentic assessment, rather than traditional single-subject class structures.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, school leadership said the middle school expansion is intended to support students earlier in their academic trajectory and build foundational skills in areas such as critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving.

New Tech Network membership

Alongside the grade expansion, the school said it has joined the New Tech Network, a national network focused on project-based learning. The network provides curriculum resources and professional development support for participating schools. Pathways High stated it is the first school in Wisconsin to join the New Tech Network.

Context: a growing, small charter school

Pathways High opened in August 2017 with 86 students and has since grown to roughly 170 students, based on public reporting and federal enrollment data. The school’s current campus occupies a former church building that was repurposed for educational use; Pathways High began operating at the W. Wisconsin Avenue location in 2020.
