Significant Road Closures and Infrastructure Updates

Effective Monday, February 2, 2026, several major infrastructure projects are set to impact travel and utility services across Milwaukee. Residents and commuters should prepare for the following changes:

  • 27th Street Viaduct Closure: As part of a major state-municipal agreement, the 27th Street Viaduct will close for a lengthy reconstruction period. This closure will significantly affect north-south travel through the Menomonee Valley. Commuters are advised to utilize 35th Street as a primary detour.
  • N. Oakland Avenue Reconstruction: Work begins today on N. Oakland Avenue between E. Capitol Drive and E. Glendale Avenue. This project includes new pavement, the installation of pedestrian safety 'bump outs,' and the critical replacement of aging lead service lines. While one lane of traffic will typically remain open, on-street parking will be restricted.
  • I-94 and Mitchell Park Domes Access: The eastbound I-94 exit to 26th Street and St. Paul Avenue will close starting at 9:00 AM today. Visitors to the Mitchell Park Domes should expect significant traffic impacts and follow posted detour signage to access the area via 35th Street.

City Council and Public Meetings

Official public proceedings continue at City Hall and within the districts today. Residents are encouraged to participate in the following sessions:

  • Judiciary & Legislation Committee: The committee is scheduled to convene at 9:00 AM in Room 301-B of City Hall. The agenda includes discussions on municipal ordinances and state legislative items.
  • 3rd District Town Hall: Alderman Alex Brower will host a town hall meeting tonight at 6:15 PM at The Vivarium (1818 N. Farwell Ave.). The meeting will focus on ICE activities and operations within the city. Doors open at 6:00 PM.

Public Service and Health Advisories

The City of Milwaukee reminds residents of several important service deadlines and safety updates:

  • School Open Enrollment: The regular open enrollment application period for the 2026-27 school year begins today, February 2. Parents wishing to apply for their children to attend a nonresident school district should submit applications via the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction website before the April 30 deadline.
  • DPW Collection Delays: Following recent extreme cold and snow events, the Department of Public Works (DPW) reports that some garbage and recycling collections remain delayed. Residents should keep their carts at the normal collection point until they are emptied.
  • Fire Safety Reminder: Following a significant apartment fire near 77th Street and Green Tree on Sunday, the Milwaukee Fire Department is urging all property owners to inspect smoke detectors and ensure all exits are clear of obstructions.
