Official City Advisory: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service Schedules and Public Notices

Holiday Observance and Municipal Office Status
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19, 2026, the City of Milwaukee has announced significant adjustments to municipal services and office hours. All non-essential City of Milwaukee offices, including City Hall and the Water Works Customer Service Center, are closed for the duration of the holiday. While live telephone and in-person assistance are unavailable, residents may still access automated billing services and account information via the municipal website. For water-related emergencies, the 24-hour Control Center remains operational to address urgent infrastructure needs.
Sanitation and Recycling Collection Schedule
The Department of Public Works (DPW) has issued a service alert regarding garbage and recycling collection. There is no scheduled pick-up for Monday, January 19. Following the city’s standard holiday protocol, all collection days for the remainder of the week will shift forward by one day. Residents originally scheduled for Monday collection should set out their carts on Tuesday; Tuesday collections will move to Wednesday, and so forth, through Saturday. Additionally, all City Drop-Off Centers are closed on Monday and will resume normal winter hours on Tuesday.
Parking Enforcement and Exemptions
The City of Milwaukee has relaxed several parking regulations to accommodate holiday activities. On Monday, January 19, there will be no enforcement of parking meters or hourly street restrictions. Furthermore, a pause in overnight parking enforcement is in effect for two consecutive nights: Sunday night into Monday morning (Jan. 19) and Monday night into Tuesday morning (Jan. 20). Enforcement of night parking permits will resume on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Please note that while many restrictions are lifted, all vehicles must still be legally parked, following all other posted safety regulations, such as proximity to fire hydrants and crosswalks. If a Snow Emergency is declared, those regulations will take precedence over holiday exemptions.
Public Health: Extreme Cold and Hypothermia Warning
The Milwaukee Health Department and local law enforcement have issued an urgent Public Service Announcement regarding severe winter conditions. With a forecasted high of only 7 degrees and wind gusts up to 30 mph, the risk of hypothermia is significant. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor exposure and to check on vulnerable neighbors. Health advisories recommend dressing in multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing and ensuring that ears, hands, and faces are fully covered to prevent frostbite. If you are in need of emergency shelter due to the cold, please contact the city's coordinated entry services.
Special Library Hours and Traffic Notices
While most Milwaukee Public Library branches are closed for the holiday, the Martin Luther King Branch is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for commemorative programming. Commuters should also be aware of ongoing traffic restrictions, including the long-term closure of South Hawley Road between West Park Hill Avenue and West Adler Street, as well as the continued closure of the 16th Street Viaduct for necessary repairs.
