A half-century local scholarship effort rooted in Milwaukee congregations

MLK Scholarships Milwaukee is reaching a milestone year, marking 50 years of raising money to help students pursue education after high school. The volunteer-run effort was built around partnerships with Milwaukee-area churches and religious institutions that nominate students and support year-round fundraising tied to the scholarship program.

The organization’s board has emphasized a focus on students with demonstrated academic achievement who face financial barriers to continuing their education. Over decades, the program has continued to operate with volunteers and community fundraising rather than a large institutional funding base.

How the program works: nominations, student participation, and award services

The scholarship program’s annual cycle includes student participation and community events. In its most recently documented award service, the program held its 49th annual scholarship award service on Jan. 12, 2025, at Hephatha Lutheran Church (1720 W. Locust St.). Students took part as candidates, with essay presentations serving as a central feature of the program.

At that 2025 service, the event brought together participants connected to seven churches, with 15 student candidates attending. The program also recognized fundraising connected to an annual “All-a-thon,” including awards for churches and student fundraising.

  • Top essay prizes at the 2025 service were $3,000 each.
  • Other awards at the event ranged from $1,000 to $2,500.

Scholarship amounts and the funding model

Program materials indicate scholarship awards have varied by year and have been described as modest compared with the cost of higher education. In 2022, scholarship grants were described as $2,000. The organization has described its funding model as being raised largely within Milwaukee’s inner city through participating institutions and through student fundraising tied to the scholarship effort.

“I can give a little, and you can give a little, and when we all come together that little becomes a lot.”

Milwaukee’s wider scholarship landscape highlights persistent demand

The 50-year milestone comes amid continuing evidence of high demand for scholarship support in Milwaukee. Milwaukee Public Schools has previously reported large, growing totals of scholarships and grants offered to graduates, and the MPS Foundation has reported awarding more than $233,000 in scholarships to the class of 2025 through its scholarship programs.

For MLK Scholarships Milwaukee, the anniversary underscores a long-running, locally organized approach to college access: annual nomination networks, student participation, and community-driven fundraising designed to turn relatively small awards into meaningful support for students continuing their education.
