Milwaukee’s Nefertari African Dance Company marks decades of performance, education, and cultural preservation work
Long-running Milwaukee ensemble rooted in a high school program
Nefertari African Dance Company is a Milwaukee-based performing group founded in 1968 at North Division High School. The company began as an outlet for young people of African descent to develop cultural knowledge and pride through African dance and drumming, initially drawing dancers from female students and alumni connected to the school.
Over time, the ensemble’s structure and reach expanded. Marilynn Douglas—who joined as a student—assumed leadership in 1997 and opened participation more broadly to the community, while continuing instruction and performance activity in Wisconsin.
Leadership and training emphasize dance history alongside technique
Company programming is organized around learning choreography and rhythm in tandem. Instruction includes an emphasis on understanding the meaning of dances, their cultural contexts, and their regional origins. The repertoire is largely centered on West African traditions, with additional dances from other parts of the continent included on occasion.
Douglas’ approach has also included developing younger leaders within the organization. Unijah Tillman, a dancer who began in childhood, has taken on increasing responsibility for leading and teaching—part of a broader continuity plan intended to keep the organization active across generations.
Affiliations and community footprint in Milwaukee
Nefertari is affiliated with the International Institute of Wisconsin, a Milwaukee nonprofit known for community programming and international engagement initiatives. Locally, the company has been a recurring participant in cultural events and public performances, including appearances connected to Holiday Folk Fair International programming and other community showcases.
Regional touring and notable appearances
Beyond Milwaukee, Nefertari has performed throughout Wisconsin and across the Midwest, and has also taken part in school and church tours in multiple U.S. cities. Publicly documented highlights from past decades include performances tied to major venues and civic celebrations, as well as a slate of educational workshops and lecture demonstrations in school settings.
