Milwaukee Rep schedules February 2026 opening for renovated Herro-Franke Studio Theater at Associated Bank Theater Center

Renovation work moves into its final phase for the downtown theater complex
Milwaukee Repertory Theater has set February 10, 2026, as the opening date for its renovated Herro-Franke Studio Theater, marking the next milestone in the redevelopment of the Associated Bank Theater Center on East Wells Street. The Studio Theater’s reopening is tied to the start of McNeal, scheduled to run from Feb. 10 through March 22, 2026.
The Studio Theater is the black-box venue within the Rep’s downtown complex, designed for smaller-scale, flexible staging. While the broader theater center began welcoming audiences in fall 2025, the studio renovation has been described as a later phase of the project, with the venue’s completion targeted for February 2026.
What changes are planned inside the Studio Theater
The reimagined Herro-Franke Studio Theater is being built around modular staging and seating intended to support multiple configurations. Planned audience capacity ranges from about 182 to 224 patrons, depending on layout. The design aims to expand production flexibility—supporting larger casts and more technically complex staging than the prior configuration—while maintaining the intimate setting that has defined the space.
The Studio Theater work is part of a wider modernization effort at the Rep’s downtown home, including technology upgrades, accessibility improvements, and reconfigured front-of-house areas intended to connect the venue’s performance spaces through a unified lobby and shared amenities.
How the reopening fits into the 2025–26 season
The Rep’s 2025–26 season was structured around construction timelines, with a one-time shift to an October-to-June calendar. The Checota Powerhouse Theater opened earlier in the season, beginning with the musical Come From Away in November 2025, while the Studio Theater’s relaunch is positioned as a midseason opening.
McNeal (Feb. 10–Mar. 22, 2026) is slated as the first production in the renovated Studio Theater.
Frida… A Self Portrait (Apr. 3–May 17, 2026) is scheduled as a subsequent Studio Theater production.
Project scale and facilities tied to the redevelopment
The Associated Bank Theater Center redevelopment has been described as an $80.1 million initiative, intended to modernize performance spaces and expand education and engagement capacity. Plans include a dedicated education and engagement center with classrooms and additional spaces to support programming for students, along with new gathering areas and venue services.
The Studio Theater’s reopening on Feb. 10, 2026, is expected to be the clearest public marker that the final major performance space within the renewed complex is returning to regular use.
With the Studio Theater’s opening date now established, the Rep’s 2025–26 season will effectively function as the first full cycle in which renovated venues come online in stages, aligning programming with the completion of construction and technical commissioning.
