What police say happened

Milwaukee police have linked a double shooting early Tuesday on the city’s northwest side to a single-vehicle crash that ended with a car on fire and one person dead.

Officers were first called at about 12:43 a.m. Tuesday to the area of North 76th Street and West Bobolink Avenue. Police reported that two people were shot. A 32-year-old was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive, with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

About 15 to 20 minutes later, police were called to a crash scene a short distance away near North 76th Street and West Florist Avenue. Investigators said the vehicle left the roadway, crashed and caught fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

How investigators connected the two scenes

In updates provided later in the week, police said they determined the crash victim had been shot before the crash, and that the gunshot wound was fatal. Based on that determination, police concluded the crash was connected to the earlier double shooting.

The person who died has not been publicly identified. Police said the victim has been tentatively identified as a 26-year-old.

What remains unknown

Investigators have not released details about what led to the shooting, whether the victims were targeted, or how the events unfolded between the shooting location and the crash site. Police also have not disclosed information about any suspect description, potential vehicle involvement beyond the crashed car, or whether any weapons have been recovered.

Police have not announced any arrests.
