Federal sentence follows investigation into purchases and online sharing of child sexual abuse material

A Milwaukee nurse has been sentenced in federal court to 78 months in prison after prosecutors said he purchased and distributed child sexual abuse material (CSAM) using digital platforms and messaging applications.

Troy Schaden, 43, was sentenced on Jan. 13, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The sentencing judge imposed a 78-month federal prison term, followed by five years of supervised release. The court also ordered that Schaden register as a sex offender under state and federal requirements.

In court, the judge characterized the offense as serious and emphasized that trafficking in such material perpetuates the sexual abuse of children.

What federal court records say investigators found

Federal case records describe a two-part pattern of conduct: acquisition and distribution. Prosecutors said Schaden was purchasing CSAM from an individual located in the United Kingdom. Investigators later executed a search warrant at Schaden’s home and reviewed seized electronic devices.

That forensic review, court records state, showed that Schaden also distributed CSAM to other users on an application called Teleguard over a period spanning February 2025 through March 2025. Prosecutors said some of the images involved infants and toddlers.

  • Sentence: 78 months in federal prison
  • Post-prison supervision: five years of supervised release
  • Additional requirement: sex-offender registration under state and federal law
  • Alleged distribution window cited in court records: February–March 2025

How federal sentencing in CSAM cases is structured

Federal judges impose sentences after considering statutory penalties, advisory sentencing guidelines, and case-specific factors presented by the prosecution and the defense at sentencing. In CSAM distribution cases, courts commonly address the scope of distribution activity, the nature of the material, and the role of digital networks in enabling rapid dissemination.

In this case, the court’s sentence combined imprisonment with supervised release conditions designed to monitor conduct after incarceration. Supervised release can include restrictions on computer and internet use, treatment requirements, and compliance checks, alongside mandatory registration obligations when applicable.

Local context

The case adds to a continuing series of federal prosecutions in Wisconsin targeting the online circulation of child sexual abuse material. Investigations frequently rely on digital evidence, device seizures, and forensic analysis that can identify sharing activity across platforms and applications, even when offenders attempt to conceal it.
