A Frigid Friday Start

Milwaukee residents are waking up to the coldest conditions of the year this Friday, January 23, 2026. As a powerful arctic high-pressure system sinks into the region from the northwest, the city is facing temperatures that are not just uncomfortable, but life-threatening. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning effective until 1:00 PM today, as the combination of sub-zero temperatures and steady winds creates a perilous environment for anyone caught outdoors.

Morning: The Deep Freeze

In the early morning hours, actual air temperatures have plummeted into the mid-negative teens, hovering around -12°F to -16°F. However, the real story is the wind chill. With northwest winds sustained at 15 to 17 mph and gusts reaching up to 30 mph, the 'feels like' temperature is bottoming out near -30°F to -39°F. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 to 30 minutes under these conditions. Despite the clear, sunny skies, the sun will provide little to no warmth during the morning commute.

Afternoon: Sunshine Without Heat

As we move into the afternoon, the Extreme Cold Warning will transition into a Cold Weather Advisory at 1:00 PM, which is scheduled to remain in place until Saturday noon. While we may see some partial sunshine, the mercury will struggle to climb, reaching a projected high of only -6°F. The brisk northwest winds will continue to gust, keeping the RealFeel temperature well below zero. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors if possible and to ensure that pets are kept inside during these extreme conditions.

Evening and Overnight Outlook

As the sun sets around 4:52 PM, clouds will begin to increase across the Milwaukee area. Temperatures will remain dangerously low, settling at an overnight low of approximately -11°F. While the winds are expected to relax slightly to around 9 mph, the persistent cold will maintain a firm grip on the city. There is a slight 11% to 20% chance of snow showers or flurries late tonight, though no significant accumulation is expected. The primary concern remains the sustained cold, which can lead to pipe bursts and vehicle battery failures.

Safety Precautions and Warnings

With a Cold Weather Advisory active through Saturday morning, the Milwaukee Department of Public Works and local health officials urge citizens to take the following precautions:

  • Limit time outdoors and dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.
  • Ensure that your car's emergency kit is stocked with blankets and jumper cables.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals who may be at risk.
  • Keep a slow drip of water running through pipes located on exterior walls to prevent freezing.
