Critical Interstate and Bridge Closures

Thursday, February 12, 2026 – Milwaukee commuters are facing a challenging morning and afternoon as several large-scale infrastructure projects intersect with immediate maintenance work. Drivers should expect a significant bottleneck on I-43 Northbound today. Maintenance crews have scheduled lane closures from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, which will likely result in tailbacks during the mid-morning transition.

Of greater concern for north-south travel is the continued closure of the 27th Street viaduct. This critical link through the Menomonee Valley shuttered on February 2nd and is expected to remain closed for approximately one year for full reconstruction. This major disruption is compounded by the 16th Street viaduct, which remains closed for emergency repairs. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation currently estimates that the 16th Street bridge will not reopen to vehicle or pedestrian traffic until April 2026. Furthermore, the I-94 eastbound exit to 26th Street and St. Paul Avenue is currently closed through the summer, further limiting access to the valley floor.

Recommended Commuter Detours

With both the 16th and 27th Street viaducts out of service, congestion on surrounding surface streets has intensified. Traffic is being officially detoured to 35th Street between Wisconsin Avenue and Greenfield Avenue. Motorists traveling to the Mitchell Park Domes or the Near West Side should allow for at least 20 minutes of additional travel time. Detour signage is in place, but local congestion is expected to peak during the afternoon rush as drivers navigate the limited remaining valley crossings.

Public Transport and MCTS Alerts

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) has implemented several long-term detours to accommodate the I-94 East-West modernization and bridge repairs. Riders are encouraged to use the Umo app for real-time tracking, as the following routes are impacted today:

  • Purple Line: Operating on a significant detour off 27th Street between Clybourn Street and National Avenue. Trip times have been shifted to account for the extra detour duration.
  • Route 24: Continuing its detour away from the 16th Street Bridge; riders should check for temporary stop locations at either end of the viaduct.
  • Route 44U: Eastbound service is detouring due to construction closing the 68th and Kearney on-ramp.
  • Routes 57, 60, and 74: These routes are currently seeing localized detours due to ongoing roadwork and pavement maintenance throughout the city.

Commuters are also reminded that the 2026 MCTS Service Plan is now active. This plan includes frequency reductions on various routes during non-peak hours (9:00 AM to 3:00 PM) to manage budget requirements while maintaining essential service coverage for peak-hour workers.

S. 1st Street Public Meeting

Residents and commuters interested in the future of the Third Ward and Walker’s Point traffic patterns should note a public engagement opportunity today. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is hosting an open house to discuss the proposed reconstruction of S. 1st Street (WIS 32). The meeting takes place from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Independence First, 540 S. 1st Street. Project managers will be on hand to answer questions regarding the construction timeline and potential lane closures as that project moves toward implementation.
