Significant Disruptions Begin on I-94 East-West Corridor

Milwaukee commuters should prepare for a major shift in their daily routes starting today, Monday, February 2, 2026. As part of the ongoing $1.75 billion Interstate 94 East-West reconstruction project, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has implemented several high-impact closures that will affect traffic patterns through the Menomonee Valley for the remainder of the year.

27th Street Bridge and Freeway Exit Closures

The most significant change for this morning's commute is the long-term closure of the 27th Street Bridge over I-94. The bridge was officially shut down to all traffic at 6:00 a.m. today. Unlike previous short-term maintenance projects, this is a full-scale replacement of the deck, girders, and piers. This critical north-south artery is expected to remain closed until late 2026.

Additionally, motorists traveling into downtown must account for a second major closure beginning at 9:00 a.m. today. The I-94 eastbound exit to 26th Street and St. Paul Avenue will be closed long-term. This exit serves as a primary gateway for those heading into the heart of the city and toward the Potawatomi Casino Hotel area. These closures, combined with the continued shutdown of the 16th Street Viaduct (James E. Groppi Unity Bridge), will significantly restrict access across the valley.

Recommended Detours and Traffic Workarounds

To navigate these closures, WisDOT and local officials recommend the following alternate routes:

  • North-South Traffic: Use 35th Street as the primary detour between W. Wisconsin Avenue and W. Greenfield Avenue. Expect increased congestion and potential signal timing adjustments along this corridor.
  • Eastbound I-94 Access: Drivers who typically use the 26th Street/St. Paul exit should instead use the 13th Street exit (Exit 310A). From there, follow posted signage to Emmber Lane and W. Canal Street.
  • Westbound I-94 Access: Continue using the 25th Street/Clybourn exit (310B) or utilize 35th Street (Exit 310A) as an alternative.

MCTS Public Transit Alerts

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) has announced that the PurpleLine will begin a significant detour today to accommodate the 27th Street Bridge closure. The line will detour off 27th Street between Clybourn Street and National Avenue. Commuters should expect trip times to be shifted to account for the extra travel time. Furthermore, the 2026 Winter Service Plan remains in effect, which includes reduced frequencies on 16 routes, including Routes 12, 14, 31, and 63, to manage current budget constraints.

Weather Impact and Safety

Adding to the morning's challenges, the forecast calls for patchy light snow and temperatures around 21 degrees. With winds gusting up to 18 mph, visibility may be reduced intermittently. Drivers are urged to allow for extra following distance, particularly as they navigate new merging patterns near the Stadium Interchange and the Zoo Interchange bottleneck.
