Milwaukee commuters should prepare for significant travel impacts this Wednesday morning, February 18, 2026. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and local officials have implemented several long-term closures as part of the I-94 East-West Freeway Project and the I-43 North-South reconstruction. With temperatures hovering around 48 degrees and scattered showers expected throughout the day, wet pavement and reduced visibility may exacerbate ongoing construction delays.

I-94 East-West Project Impacts

The most substantial disruptions are concentrated within the "Early East Leg" of the I-94 corridor. Motorists are reminded of the following major closures currently in effect:

• 27th Street Viaduct: The bridge over I-94 is completely closed between St. Paul Avenue and Evergreen Lane. This closure is expected to last through late 2026. Drivers are urged to use 35th Street or 13th Street as primary north-south alternatives.

• Mitchell Boulevard: Both the I-94 eastbound exit ramp to General Mitchell Boulevard and the corresponding entrance ramp to westbound I-94 remain closed through March 2026.

I-43 and Other Local Arteries

On the north side, I-43 southbound continues to see construction activity between Silver Spring Drive and Capitol Drive. Commuters should expect narrowed lanes and intermittent overnight shutdowns. Furthermore, the 16th Street Viaduct remains closed from West Clybourn Street to West Pierce Street for critical bridge inspections and repairs, redirecting heavy traffic onto the 6th Street viaduct.

Public Transit and MCTS Alerts

Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) riders should be aware that the 2026 Service Plan is now in full effect. Routes 20, 28, 33, 34, 55, and 58 are operating on "peak-only" schedules to address budget adjustments. Several routes are also under active detours:

• PurpleLine: Detouring off 27th Street between Clybourn and National due to the viaduct closure.
• Route 60: Detouring off Hawley Road from Bluemound Road to Main Street.
• Route 44U: Utilizing a detour to bypass the closed 68th and Kearney eastbound on-ramp.
