Sunday Morning Traffic and Monday Outlook

As of Sunday morning, February 1, 2026, traffic across the Milwaukee metro area is moving at normal weekend speeds. However, this is the "calm before the storm" for commuters who rely on the Menomonee Valley transit corridor. While today offers a final opportunity for a smooth crossing on several key arteries, local authorities are urging residents to finalize their detour plans before the Monday morning rush.

I-94 East-West Corridor: 27th Street Bridge Shutdown

The most significant disruption to Milwaukee's commute begins tomorrow, but preparations are already visible today. Starting Monday, February 2, at 6:00 a.m., the 27th Street Bridge (viaduct) over I-94 will close for a full-scale reconstruction. This is a long-term project, with the bridge not expected to reopen until late 2026.

  • Detour Info: All north-south traffic is being diverted to 35th Street between W. Wisconsin Avenue and W. Greenfield Avenue. Expect heavy congestion on 35th Street throughout the coming weeks as it absorbs the volume from 27th Street.
  • Freeway Access: Tomorrow at 9:00 a.m., the I-94 eastbound exit to 26th Street and St. Paul Avenue will also shut down long-term. Drivers should use the 13th Street exit (Exit 310A) as an alternative.

Additionally, commuters are reminded that the 16th Street Bridge (James E. Groppi Unity Bridge) remains closed for emergency repairs and is not expected to reopen until April. With both the 16th and 27th Street bridges out of commission, the Menomonee Valley will be a significant bottleneck for the foreseeable future.

MCTS Public Transport Alerts

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) has implemented several changes that will impact Sunday and Monday travelers:

  • PurpleLine Detour: Starting this month, the PurpleLine will begin a significant detour off 27th Street between Clybourn Street and National Avenue. MCTS advises riders that all trip times have been shifted to accommodate this added travel time.
  • Route 33 (West Allis): For those traveling today, Route 33 is operating on its modified Sunday schedule, available only from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Fare Reminder: Passengers are reminded that bus fares increased in January to $2.75 for a single ride, with the daily fare cap now set at $8.25.

Shorewood Construction Alert

Outside of the valley, Shorewood residents should prepare for the reconstruction of N. Oakland Avenue between Capitol Drive and Glendale Avenue, which begins Monday morning. While one lane of traffic will generally remain open, parking will be strictly prohibited in work zones, and bus reroutes for the area are expected to begin with the Monday morning service.
