Major Freeway Reconstruction and Local Detours Impact Monday Morning Commute

Overview of Milwaukee Traffic Conditions

Commuters in the Milwaukee metropolitan area should prepare for significant travel times and multiple navigation hurdles this morning, Monday, February 16, 2026. A combination of massive freeway reconstruction projects, long-term local bridge closures, and the second month of the 2026 transit service realignment is creating a complex commute for those traveling into and through the city center. Drivers are urged to allow at least an extra 15 to 20 minutes for their morning trips.

Major Freeway Alerts: I-94 and I-43

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) continues its multi-year modernization of the I-94 East-West corridor. Several critical access points remain closed as part of the 'Early East Leg' segment of the project:

  • 27th Street Bridge: The bridge over I-94 is closed long-term for demolition and reconstruction. This is a primary north-south artery, and motorists are being detoured to 35th Street or 13th Street.
  • I-94 Eastbound Ramps: The eastbound exit to 26th Street and St. Paul Avenue remains closed. Additionally, the General Mitchell Boulevard entrance to I-94 Westbound and the exit from I-94 Eastbound are shut down through late March 2026 for median utility work.
  • I-43 Southbound: In the North-South corridor between Glendale and Grafton, southbound lanes are subject to a long-term closure and traffic shift that is expected to last until April. Expect significant delays near the Silver Spring Drive interchange.

Local Road and Viaduct Restrictions

Beyond the freeway system, several key local connectors are currently offline, complicating the grid for local traffic:

  • Hawley Road: The stretch between Park Hill Avenue and West Adler Street is fully closed. This is a years-long closure associated with the I-94 expansion and is not scheduled to reopen until 2028.
  • 16th Street Viaduct: This vital link over the Menomonee River remains closed to all traffic for ongoing safety inspections and repairs.
  • West Greves Street: Closed from the 27th Street Viaduct westward, further restricting access in the Menomonee Valley.

Public Transit and MCTS Service Changes

Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) riders must navigate the 2026 Winter Service Plan. Transit users should be aware of the following:

  • Frequency Reductions: To address budget gaps, 16 routes—including the 12, 14, 31, 51, 53, 57, 60, and 63—are operating with reduced service frequencies.
  • Peak-Only Service: Routes 20, 28, 33, 34, 55, and 58 are currently restricted to peak travel hours only.
  • Route Detours: The PurpleLine and Route 24 are detouring away from 27th Street and the 16th Street Viaduct. Route 60 is currently detouring off Hawley Road.
  • Fare Updates: Fixed route base fares remain at the $2.75 rate established at the start of the year.

Safety Cautions

With Wisconsin's "Frozen Road" laws in effect, motorists should expect a higher volume of heavy freight vehicles on the road. Additionally, given the winter season, drivers are reminded to give snow-clearing crews plenty of room to work. WisDOT reports that multiple snowplows have been struck by motorists this winter; please stay alert and maintain a safe following distance.
