Milwaukee Traffic and Commute Update: Tuesday, February 17, 2026

Commuters in the Milwaukee area should prepare for significant travel impacts today as several major infrastructure projects reach critical phases. With the I-94 East-West Freeway Project in full swing and local viaduct closures in effect, drivers and transit riders are encouraged to allow at least 20 extra minutes for their morning and afternoon trips.

I-94 and I-43 Freeway Alerts

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has officially entered the "Early East Leg" of the I-94 reconstruction. The most significant impact for today's commute is the long-term closure of the 27th Street bridge over I-94. This bridge is completely closed to traffic to facilitate reconstruction, and the I-94 eastbound exit to 26th Street and St. Paul Avenue is also out of service through the summer. Motorists are advised to use 35th Street or 13th Street as primary detours.

On the West Leg of the I-94 project, lane and ramp closures continue between 70th Street and the Stadium Interchange. Furthermore, commuters using I-43 Northbound should be aware of a scheduled maintenance window today between Brown Street and Capitol Drive. Crews will be active from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., which may cause midday bottlenecks.

Major City Street Closures

The Milwaukee Department of Public Works has several high-impact closures active today:

  • 27th Street Viaduct: The viaduct over the Menomonee River is closed to all traffic for work associated with the freeway project.
  • South Hawley Road: A full closure is in effect between West Park Hill Avenue and West Adler Street. This closure is expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future as part of the Hawley Road interchange reconstruction.
  • 16th Street Viaduct: This remains closed for ongoing bridge inspections and repairs. Drivers must detour using the 6th Street Viaduct.

MCTS Transit and Bus Reroutes

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is operating under its new 2026 Service Plan. Riders should note that base fares increased to $2.75 at the start of the year. Several key routes are currently on long-term detours due to the construction mentioned above:

  • PurpleLine: Detouring off 27th Street between Clybourn and National Avenue.
  • Route 24: Detouring off the 16th Street Bridge using the 6th Street Viaduct.
  • Route 60: Detouring off Hawley Road.
  • Peak-Only Service: Routes 20, 28, 33, 34, 55, and 58 are currently operating on restricted schedules. Check the Umo app for real-time arrivals.

Winter Driving Conditions

With the Frozen Road Law in effect, weight limits have increased for heavy haulers, and the Department of Transportation is urging drivers to give snowplows plenty of space. While major arteries are salted, secondary roads may remain slick during the early morning hours. Stay safe and plan accordingly.
