I-94 Ramp Closures and Sub-Zero Temperatures Disrupt Saturday Commutes

Milwaukee Traffic Update: Saturday, January 24, 2026

Commuters and weekend travelers in Milwaukee should prepare for significant roadwork impacts on major arteries today, coupled with dangerously low temperatures. As the I-94 East-West reconstruction project progresses into its next phases, several key access points are seeing long-term changes that will affect your route through the city.

I-94 Construction and Ramp Closures

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has confirmed that the "Early East Leg" segment of the I-94 project is now active. Motorists should be particularly aware of the following impacts in the downtown and west-side corridors:

  • 28th Street Ramp Closure: Starting this weekend, the entrance ramp from 28th Street to I-94 westbound is scheduled to close for approximately two months to accommodate necessary utility work. Drivers are advised to use the 35th Street or 13th Street on-ramps as detours.
  • I-94 West Leg: Reconstruction continues between 70th Street and 16th Street. While two lanes remain open in most sections, the current traffic configuration is causing intermittent delays. WisDOT recommends allowing at least 15 extra minutes for travel through the Stadium Interchange area.
  • I-41 Impacts: Drivers on I-41 will encounter overnight lane reductions in active work zones. Specifically, Lynndale Drive remains reduced to a single lane in both directions, a condition expected to persist through late spring.

MCTS Transit Alerts and Service Changes

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is operating under its Winter 2026 Service Plan, which took effect earlier this month. Public transport users should note the following adjustments for their Saturday travels:

  • Route Detours: Route 24 continues its long-term detour off the 16th Street Bridge over the Menomonee River. Additionally, emergency construction detours are in place for the GreenLine and Route 15 near 1st Street, between Greenfield and Lapham.
  • Service Frequencies: Under the new budget-balancing plan, several routes including 20 (S. 20th Street) and 28 (108th Street) have seen frequency reductions during non-peak hours. All riders are encouraged to check updated Saturday timetables.
  • Extreme Cold Warning: With temperatures hovering near -11°F and an extreme cold watch in effect, UBus services and certain school-specific routes have experienced intermittent suspensions. Riders should use the WisGo app to track buses in real-time and minimize time spent at outdoor stops.

Weather and Safety Advisory

Beyond construction, the primary challenge for today’s commute is the weather. Dangerous wind chills and sub-zero temperatures can lead to frostbite in minutes and may affect vehicle battery performance. If you must travel, ensure your vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit. For those using public transit, warming centers remain available at major hubs to provide relief from the elements until the extreme cold watch is lifted.
