I-94 Lane Restrictions and Shamrock Shuffle Crowds Impact Saturday Commute

Weekend Traffic and Construction Overview
Milwaukee drivers should prepare for a mix of long-term construction projects and heavy event traffic this Saturday, March 7, 2026. While most of the city remains navigable, major arteries like I-94 and I-43 are experiencing significant disruptions due to ongoing modernization efforts. Additionally, downtown congestion is expected to peak this afternoon due to several high-profile events and seasonal celebrations.
Interstate Construction and Lane Closures
The I-94 East-West Freeway project continues to be the primary concern for commuters. Drivers should be aware of the following impacts near the city center:
- I-94 Eastbound: Long-term lane restrictions remain in place between 35th Street and 25th Street. The 27th Street bridge over I-94 is currently closed for reconstruction, and the eastbound exit to 26th Street/St. Paul Avenue remains inaccessible. WisDOT is currently preparing for an additional single-lane closure on eastbound I-94 scheduled to begin Monday, but crews are already active in the area this weekend.
- I-43 North-South: In the Glendale area, lane shifts and construction-related delays are expected on I-43 Southbound. This work is part of the ongoing 14-mile modernization project and is scheduled to continue through early April.
- Ramp Closures: The 35th Street entrance ramp to I-94 Eastbound is closed for the duration of the current project phase. Motorists are encouraged to use Wisconsin Avenue or Clybourn Street as alternate routes to access the freeway system.
Downtown Events and Pedestrian Alerts
Expect heavy traffic and limited parking in the downtown and Westown districts throughout the day. The annual Shamrock Shuffle is taking place today, bringing thousands of participants to the Water Street and Old World Third Street entertainment corridors. Combined with Anime Milwaukee 2026 at the Baird Center and the season opening of the Northwestern Mutual Community Park at the lakefront, traffic flow will be significantly slower than a typical Saturday.
Theater-goers attending the matinee or evening performances of Hadestown at the Marcus Center should allow at least 30 extra minutes for travel and parking. Furthermore, a large concert is scheduled at The Rave/Eagles Club tonight at 7:00 PM, which will likely cause congestion on West Wisconsin Avenue.
Public Transit Updates
The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is currently operating on standard Saturday schedules, but riders should be alert for major service changes starting tomorrow, Sunday, March 8. Under the 2026 Phase II service plan, Routes 11, 22, 24, 80, and 88 will see segment shortenings and frequency adjustments. For today, the Purple Line and Route 60 continue to follow long-term detours around the I-94 construction zones.
