Highway 24 resurfacing in Milwaukee County resumes mid-March 2026, with lane reductions and signal work

Work resumes after winter pause on Forest Home Avenue corridor
Resurfacing work on WIS 24 (Forest Home Avenue) in Milwaukee County is scheduled to resume in mid-March 2026 after pausing for the winter. The project covers about five miles between Janesville Road in the Village of Hales Corners and 45th Street in the City of Milwaukee. Construction began in late March 2025 and is scheduled to finish in mid-2026, with timelines dependent on weather and field conditions.
What is being rebuilt and upgraded
The 2025–26 work includes pavement resurfacing and a package of accessibility and operational improvements along the corridor. Planned upgrades include replacement of traffic signals at several intersections, improvements to a bridge structure at 76th Street, and reconstruction of curb ramps at multiple locations to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
- Resurfacing WIS 24 (Forest Home Avenue) within the project limits
- Traffic signal replacements at 76th Street, Coldspring Road and 68th Street
- Bridge-structure improvements at 76th Street
- Curb-ramp reconstruction at various locations to meet ADA standards
Two segments, with different levels of remaining work
Project information divides the corridor into two segments. The northern segment—from 45th Street to Howard Avenue—is described as substantially complete, with remaining work focused on lighting and restoration. The southern segment—from Howard Avenue to Janesville Road—has major work scheduled for spring and early summer 2026, including resurfacing, pavement markings, guardrail installation and intersection improvements.
Construction preparation along Forest Home Avenue is expected during the week of March 16, 2026, with construction activities anticipated to begin the week of March 23, 2026, depending on weather.
Traffic impacts: lane reductions, intermittent closures and maintained access
Traffic is expected to be maintained in both directions during construction, but drivers should plan for long-term single-lane closures on the Howard Avenue-to-Janesville Road segment and short-term lane closures on the 45th Street-to-Howard Avenue segment while remaining tasks are completed. Project materials also note that parking restrictions may be used in active work zones, and that short-term or overnight closures may occur at some ramps and intersections as work progresses.
Access to businesses and residences is expected to be maintained throughout construction. Temporary pedestrian detours may be posted where sidewalk and curb-ramp work affects normal routing.
What commuters should do now
With the restart window set for mid-March 2026, drivers who rely on Forest Home Avenue should anticipate slower travel times during peak periods and consider alternate routes when lane reductions are in effect. Because work is weather-dependent and staging can shift, commuters should be prepared for changing lane configurations and intermittent, short-duration closures near active work zones.
