A Milwaukee landmark returns to Brady Street

Glorioso’s Italian Market, the long-running specialty grocer at 1011 E. Brady St. on Milwaukee’s Lower East Side, has reopened following a months-long closure triggered by a fire in October 2025. The store’s return coincides with its 80th anniversary year, marking eight decades since the business opened in 1946.

The market resumed operations with a reopening on Jan. 7, 2026, after cleanup and reconstruction work. The building fire that prompted the shutdown was reported in the early morning hours of Oct. 3, 2025, with responders called around 3:30 a.m. No injuries were reported at the time.

What happened and what had to be rebuilt

The fire occurred in units above the market, with early reporting indicating it may have originated near a second-floor server or laundry area. In the aftermath, the store remained closed as crews addressed smoke impacts and the complications of operating a food business in a space requiring inspection, deep cleaning and repairs.

Store representatives have described the recovery as both restoration and restart: inventory had to be removed, the market’s interior and systems needed attention, and the reopening has been staged as operations and stocking return to normal levels. Some reporting has placed restoration costs in the millions, with losses not necessarily fully covered by insurance.

Grand reopening and 80th anniversary schedule

Glorioso’s has scheduled a six-week “Grand Reopening 80th Anniversary Celebration” running from Jan. 19 through Feb. 28, 2026. The celebration is structured around in-store promotions and giveaways intended to draw customers back after the closure.

  • Free Glorioso’s artisan dried pasta offered to current and new rewards members during the celebration window.
  • A sales flyer featuring recurring deals on customer-favorite items.
  • Giveaways and contest-style promotions, including entries tied to prizes such as a trip for two to Rome and year-long food prizes (such as sauce or a deli sandwich).
  • Limited-edition 80th anniversary merchandise offered for purchase.

Ownership and continuity

Glorioso’s began as a family business founded by brothers Joe, Eddie and Teddy Glorioso in 1946. In 2024, the market was sold to new ownership connected to the Valli Produce grocery operation. Public statements around the transition have emphasized continuity, with the store maintaining its established identity as a neighborhood grocer and specialty-food destination on Brady Street.

The anniversary programming frames the reopening as a community milestone as well as a business recovery, highlighting employees, customers and vendor relationships that have sustained the store across generations.
