Common Council and Committee Updates

Residents are advised of changes to the legislative calendar for Monday, January 26, 2026. The meeting of the Steering and Rules Committee, originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Room 301-B at City Hall, has been officially cancelled. While committee meetings are typically a staple of Monday municipal business, no other major council sessions are slated for today. Community members are encouraged to monitor the City Channel or the official legislative portal for the rescheduling of agenda items, which includes discussions on the 2026 municipal budget priorities and urban development projects.

DPW Service Alert: Trash and Recycling Collection

The Department of Public Works (DPW) has issued an update regarding sanitation services following recent weather disruptions. Due to the extreme cold temperatures experienced late last week, non-emergency field operations were temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of city workers. Consequently, residents whose garbage and recycling collection was originally scheduled for last Friday should set out their carts today, Monday, January 26. Crews are scheduled to work extended hours throughout this week to clear the backlog of collections. To assist in this effort, residents are asked to clear a path through snow and ice so that carts can be easily rolled to collection trucks.

Public Health Advisory: Extreme Cold and Warming Centers

The Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) remains on high alert as a cold weather advisory continues across Southeast Wisconsin. With wind chills reaching dangerous levels, officials urge residents to limit time spent outdoors and to cover all exposed skin to prevent frostbite. In coordination with the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management, the Washington Park Senior Center at 4420 W. Vliet St. is operating as the primary overnight emergency warming shelter. Residents in need of immediate warmth, transportation to a shelter, or energy assistance are encouraged to dial 2-1-1. Additionally, the MHD has highlighted the 2025 Community Health Assessment, which identifies mental health and chronic disease prevention as top priorities for the 2026 calendar year.

Winter Maintenance and Parking Reminders

Standard overnight parking enforcement is in full effect across the city. Residents must continue to adhere to winter parking regulations, including alternate side parking rules, which remain active through March 1, 2026. These regulations ensure that emergency vehicles and snow plows have adequate access to residential streets. Furthermore, Milwaukee Water Works advises homeowners to take precautions against frozen pipes by allowing a thin stream of water to flow from faucets during extreme cold spikes. Finally, today marks one of the final opportunities for curbside Christmas tree collection; residents can request a pickup through the MKE Mobile Action app or by calling the city service line before the January 31 deadline.
