City Bulletin: Health Alerts, Winter Parking, and Presidents' Day Service Adjustments

Public Health Advisory: Measles Exposure and Cold Weather Precautions
The Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has issued an urgent advisory regarding a confirmed measles exposure at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. Officials have identified several residents who may have been exposed following a flight arrival on January 29. Individuals who were at the airport during the late-night hours of January 29 or early morning of January 30 are advised to monitor for symptoms through February 19, 2026. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic red rash. Those experiencing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider by phone before visiting a clinic to prevent further transmission.
Additionally, in response to recent extreme temperatures, the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County have activated emergency warming shelters. Residents in need of a warm space are encouraged to call 211 for the nearest available location and transportation assistance. Health officials remind citizens to limit time outdoors and check on vulnerable neighbors during this period of extreme cold.
Department of Public Works: Presidents' Day Holiday Schedule
In observance of Presidents' Day on Monday, February 16, 2026, most City of Milwaukee offices will be closed. Residents should be aware of the following service adjustments:
- Garbage and Recycling: There will be no garbage or recycling collection on Monday, February 16. All scheduled pickups for the coming week will shift forward by one day. Residents are encouraged to check their specific collection calendar online for their updated service date.
- Drop-Off Centers: City of Milwaukee Drop-Off Centers are closed every Monday and will remain closed through the holiday.
- Parking Enforcement: Hourly parking restrictions and metered parking will be suspended on Monday, February 16. Overnight parking enforcement is also scheduled to be suspended on the night of Sunday, February 15, into the morning of Monday, February 16. However, vehicles must still be parked legally and in accordance with all other posted regulations.
Winter Parking Regulations and Legislative Updates
Standard winter parking regulations remain in effect throughout the city until March 1, 2026. This includes the prohibition of overnight parking on through-highways and bus routes between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Unless otherwise posted, alternate side parking is required on most residential streets. In the event of a declared Snow Emergency, these regulations are superseded by emergency parking rules, which require strictly enforced alternate side parking citywide.
At City Hall, the Common Council is currently reviewing proposed legislation aimed at addressing food insecurity. The 'Food Apartheid' ordinance would require grocery store operators to provide a 60-day notice prior to any planned closures, allowing for a 30-day city intervention period. This initiative is designed to protect resident access to fresh food and stabilize the local retail environment.
